Year 2 Autumn Term Overview 2017
Welcome to Year 2!
We have put together some information that you may find useful as you support your child this year.
Year 2 Topics
Here is a brief overview of the areas that Year 2 will be studying this term. Where appropriate, subjects will be linked to our Geography topic. There will also be a cross-curricular emphasis throughout school on the children understanding and demonstrating our school values as part of the Character Curriculum. We want to encourage the children to develop these important character strengths: Self-Awareness, Courage, Personal Responsibility,
Motivation, Resilience, Creativity, Respect, Empathy, Tolerance, Altruism, Trust and Inclusion. This will obviously be done at an appropriate level and using suitable vocabulary for the age of the children.
Geography: The children will be investigating Contrasting Localities:
The Seaside. This will be based on our trip to Skegness. Through this unit the children will learn about seaside towns in the UK in pictures and on maps. We will learn about activities that take place in these areas and the uses of buildings. This will be compared to what the children know about the city of Nottingham. The children will also be learning about the geographical terms and features that are associated with the seaside.
An Island Home. This will be based on our work in Literacy about the character of Katie Morag who lives on a Scottish island. We will be using maps and research to compare and contrast island life with life on a remote island. The children will also be learning how to draw their own maps and include and label geographical features.
The children’s reading, writing and maths targets can be found in the front of their reading diary. They will be working towards these in class. You can also use these targets as a guide when supporting your child’s learning at home.
It is essential that your child is reading every single evening and that they are practising their times tables and spellings. It is important that you continue to listen to your child read as often as possible and record this in their organisers. We will reward children who read at home daily, so signing your child's organiser helps to make sure they get the recognition they deserve.
As well as reading with your child, please encourage them to practise times tables for 5 minutes each day. They should be working on 10’s, 2’s and 5’s this term and there will be tests each Friday. Spellings will be given out weekly and usually tested on Fridays.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Thursday.
You will find a curriculum map of the main activities for this term on the back of this page.
