F2 Understanding Our World
Our F1 Work
Ducklings
F1 found out about ‘changes and growth’ by caring for 5 ducklings. The children observed the ducklings hatching from their eggs and learnt how to care for them. The ducklings were then rehomed. Here are the children holding the ducklings.
RSPB – Wild Words
Rosalind, from the RSPB visited our class and led us on a ‘Wild Word Journey’ around the school grounds. During our journey we pretended to view the world through the eyes of a ‘snail’, spotting and exploring the fantastic natural artefacts within the schools outdoor area. We explored the texture, smell and look of the natural world around us.
Light and Dark
The children enjoyed using torches to find out which objects let light pass through and which objects don’t.
Black History Week
As part of Black History Week, F1 focussed on the values of Martin Luther King Jr and his belief in ‘Peace and Harmony’. We worked together, playing ‘pass the handshake’ around the circle and coloured and cut out hand prints, sticking them together to represent unity.
Later in the week, we listened to traditional African folk tales such as ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and ‘Anansi and the Magic Pot’.
One child’s parent spent some time in the session, teaching the children about African block prints. They worked together to create block prints using paints.
At the end of the week, we learnt an African song called ‘Funga Alafia’ and practised playing a Django drum.
