Olympic Legacy Project
Olympic Legacy Project

We were delighted when we were approached to take part in this project. Along with eight other city schools our Year 5 children have the amazing opportunity of competing in a gymnastics competition at The Copper Box in the Olympic Park in London. Each week, they have been attending a one hour session at the Rushcliffe gymnasium where they have been practising their vault routines for the big day. The floor routines have been delivered after school by Mrs North and Miss Childs.
Mrs North will be working alongside a number of city school staff on this project. The leading school (Welbeck Primary) have received funding to carry out an exciting programme of events for Year 5 pupils in the chosen schools. The focus will be to engage more children into the sport of gymnastics and develop their confidence in performance and competition.
Mrs North will attend CPD Gymnastics training at Rushcliffe which will be delivered by highly skilled gymnastics coaches. Following this, all children in Year 5 will have the opportunity to attend six sessions of gymnastics coaching at Ruschcliffe. The project will culminate in a fabulous day in London, where all the children will compete at the Copper Box in the Olympic Park.

On Monday 31st March, two children from Year 5 joined Miss Childs and Mrs North for the CPD training at Rushcliffe.
We were taught two floor routines which included different jumps, balances and rolls. We’re now ready to deliver these sessions in school to the whole of Year 5 in preparation for the big day! Our sessions will run as two after school clubs to ensure maximum learning in smaller groups. |

This was the final part of our Olympic Legacy Project which we have been working towards over the course of the summer term.
Well done to Edie Malcolm who won the Gold medal, Wiktoria Wrona and Michelle Jamera who shared 3rd place and came home with Bronze and Tabitha Kantenga who came 4th. Congratulations to the boys’ team also for their success. Ebenezer Mjojo, won Silver, Usman Ali took Bronze and Ehtshaam Shafiq came 4th. A very special mention to Ehtshaam Shafiq, who assisted Mrs North and Miss Childs in the delivery of the floor routines and his commitment to the role each week. Thank you Ehtshaam! |

We finally got to compete at The Copper Box in the Olympic Park, where we had an amazing time. Seven schools took part and each one brought their own banner to display on the day.
Congratulations to Edie Malcolm (Gold), Wiktoria Wrona and Michelle Jamera (Bronze) and Tabitha Kantenga who came 4th in the girls’ competition.

The day before everyone was excited about going to London, but worried about getting up early enough to catch the bus. (Aleks Y5)
As I jumped over the vault, I could hear the rest of our school cheering me along. When the teacher called, ‘and the Gold Medallist is… Edie Malcolm from St Mary’s…’ we were on our feet and very proud of Edie. (Ella Towlson Y5)
When we entered the building, we saw a huge arena and everything was set up. (Maks Year 5)
