F1 Maths Stay and Play

At the start of the Summer Term, F1 opened up the Nursery to parents by holding a Stay and Play session.

The focus of this session was to help parents gain an understanding of how we teach maths within Early Years, as well as giving them some ideas of suitable maths activities and games that they can carry out at home with their children.

During the session, the children shared their learning journeys with their grown-ups.

The session was very well received, with some parents suggesting that we held more open sessions with a similar theme. their grownups.

Helping families in Nottingham to stop smoking

Picture
City centre ‘big belly’ bins now feature a follow-up to the Dear Santa quit smoking campaign.  Shown before Christmas, the adverts are a post-it note reply back to the child from mums, dads and grandparents. For example, dad says he has packed in so can now afford to take the family on holiday. Grandma says she has quit because she wants to see her grandchild grow up. The messages directed smokers to free text Santa to 80800 or call New Leaf on 0800 561 2121 for free stop smoking aids and support.

New Year is the time for parents to think about quitting with New Year’s resolutions, especially after seeing the Health Harms campaign on TV or billboards.

New Leaf ‘Next Stop’ Bus Campaign

New Leaf Stop Smoking Service has launched a new advertising campaign on Nottingham City buses to encourage smokers to make New Leaf their  ’Next Stop’.  The adverts outline the free support and stop smoking aids offered by the service.

Stopping smoking is the most important thing a person can to do to improve their health.

To refer anyone please call 0800 561 2121.

People are 4 times more likely to stop smoking using New Leaf than by trying to stop on their own.

This year’s No Smoking Day will be on the 20th March.

F2 Stay and Play

“I found it very useful to see which methods are being used to teach the children.  It was very informative and now I have seen the methods used, I can implement these methods at home.”

“The session was very useful and will be a great help for us to help my child at home.  It was very well explained.  The packs to take home were a great idea.”

“It is good to see how to break down words and make the sounds.  The letter formation is helpful as well. We will be practising at home.”

“I’m really impressed about the teachers, the way they show the kids how to learn. I like the way they doing, all done with fun and smiles without any stress.”

On the 15th and 16th October, Foundation 2 held a phonics workshop for parents and carers.

After the workshops, they could stay and explore the classroom with their child.  This workshop was a great success, as 96.7% of parents and carers attended.  We would like to thank all the parents who came and for their positive feedback.
Both the children and the staff thoroughly enjoyed having Foundation 2’s ‘grown-ups’ in for part of the morning and we look forward to inviting them in again soon.

F1 Reading Stay and Play

During the session, parents and carers also had an opportunity to spend time with their child, carrying out some of the day-to-day learning activities that happen in the classroom; this gave the teacher and TAs an opportunity to share children’s progression and learning with their adults.
In October, F1 held four Stay and Play sessions for parents to visit the setting.  The focus for these sessions was to teach parents the importance of early reading with young children.

We did this through modelling how we would share a book with the children. Staff demonstrated how rhyme, rhythm and robot teaching strategies play an important part in children’s early literacy skills.

The children were also introduced to their ‘Bookstart’ treasure packs and spent time sharing a story with their parent or carer.

The workshop was provided to show parents/carers the calculation methods we use to teach children.

It was a great success and we will repeat the session again for those who couldn’t make it to this one but would like to attend.
