Our Rights Council

RRSA

After achieving the Recognition of Commitment (ROC) for the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA), we are currently working towards achieving RRSA level one before the end of the spring term.  Each class has made a charter of the rights and responsibilities they consider most important.  The Rights Council have carried out assemblies to help the whole school understand what their rights are and how to respect other people’s rights.  They have also been busy making rights posters which are displayed around school.  The Rights Council are currently working to develop awareness of children’s rights during break times and lunchtimes.

MUNDI Project

We are now in the third and final year of the MUNDI project where each class will explore two questions.
  1. What rights and responsibilities do I / we have to ensure we all live together more happily?
  2. How can we make the world a more sustainable place?

For the first part of the MUNDI global dimensions project, we considered the questions 'Who am I?' and 'Where do I come from?' As a school, we used the 'Minature Earth' film ( www.miniature-earth.com ) to help us imagine St. Mary's as a village of 100 people, eventually creating our own version of the film.

This whole school project was so successful that Alex from MUNDI invited us to share it with other schools at a conference. Three members of the production team (from the school and rights councils) presented the work of St. Mary's to other teachers.
