Whole School - RE

Praying for Peace Day

On October 18th 2018, the whole school took part in praying the Rosary for World Peace. It was hoped that 1 million children around the world would join their prayers together on this very special day. We prayed to Our Lady and heard the story about a young girl called Nousseira Habib whose life was saved after her friends prayed to Mary to save her.

Harvest Festival 2018

The whole school celebrated Harvest Festival by dressing up in our brightest clothes and bringing in money to send to CAFOD. The children also donated tinned and fresh food and this was taken to the local soup kitchen to help those in need in our local area.

Our Lady of Lourdes Launch Day

On October 16th 2018, all the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Primary and Secondary Catholic schools came together at the Newark Showground to launch our new Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, Our Lady of Lourdes. Year 4 represented the school and found out all about Our Lady of Lourdes. They also enjoyed Mass which was celebrated by Bishop Patrick. The children loved seeing their friends from other schools and the Year 7 children from Trinity who left our school last year.

Whole School Advent Reflection Day

On Monday December 4th, the whole school took part in an Advent Reflection Day to mark the beginning of our preparation for Christmas.

Each class took part in reflective and prayerful activities throughout the day.

The day culminated in a sharing assembly where members of each class came to the front to talk about the activities covered by their class. We then lit the first purple candle of each class Advent Wreath which signifies ‘Hope’.

The Bishop's Mass

We had a wonderful celebration of the Eucharist with Bishop McKinney. He complemented the children on the very respectful way they participated in the Mass, their excellent behaviour and their joyful singing. Bishop McKinney was overjoyed to receive a Birmingham City shirt,  representing the fact that he is the 10th Bishop of the Nottinghamshire diocese and his passionate support for Birmingham City football team.

Whilst at the school he blessed a statue of Our Lady designed by Venerable Mary Potter. This Victorian statue, which has been brought over from Rome, will eventally be positioned in St Mary`s Church   He also commissioned our Chaplaincy team and congratulated them on their work in the school community.

Traditional Prayers

Here are some of the traditional prayers that your child needs to know.

The children will be learning them at school but it would be a great support if you could also share them at home.

The Blessing of the Crosses

We were so grateful to all the children, supported by their parents, who designed and made crosses to be displayed on our school fence.

They look amazing and are a real sign of the Catholic nature of St Mary’s.

They are a reminder that all are welcome at our school and that we all work together as a team for the good of the school and the whole community.

Thanks also to the parents who helped to attach the crosses onto the fence and to Father David who blessed them for us and explained why the cross is such an important symbol to our religion.
