Book Day in F2.


Literacy

We have been trying really hard to hear sounds in words and trying to write letters and a simple sentence. We are reading and writing all the time in F2, even outdoors. We loved the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, so we made a bridge in our outdoor classroom and took turns to be the troll.

​Working Together

Can you work together to make a house for the three little pigs?
Grace  “The wolf gets crunched up into a ball and it gets flat like a pancake.”

Willis “I used bricks and I used all of the bricks.”

Josiah “We are going to trap him with the sticks.”


Synthetic Sounds

It is important, that when teaching your child phonemes (sounds), they are being pronounced as ‘pure’ sounds. The video below will show you how to pronounce them correctly.

Our F1 Work


​World Book Day 

To celebrate ‘World Book Day’, the children came to nursery dressed as their favourite story character.  They enjoyed showing their costumes to the other children and talked about their favourite character.  They also shared their favourite book with friends, looking at the pictures together and talking about the events.


​Mr Tongue

 Each week, the children join in with the interactive story ‘Mr Tongue’.  The story guides the children through a series of tongue and mouth strengthening exercises, with the aim of developing their communication and language skills.

Nottingham City Children’s Book Awards 2017

In March, the children had a visit from our local librarian, Marian.  She read us three stories and we then voted for our favourite.  The class’s favourite story in the morning session was Walter’s Wonderful Web and in the afternoon session, Don’t Wake Up Tiger.  All schools in Nottingham City have an opportunity to take part in the book awards, with the overall winner being announced on 16th June 2017.  The class was presented with a copy of each story, and the children were keen to develop their reading skills during independent learning time by reading the stories themselves.

Polish Story Session

In the Nursery, we embrace the variety of languages spoken by the children and their families. Here we are listening to a Polish version of the traditional tale ‘Cinderella’, read by Gosia. We also explored the book during independent learning time.  As well as this, Gosia taught us the song Frere Jaques in Polish.

The Foundation 1 children have been busy creating puppets to use in our reading area.

​Literacy (Reading) Stay and Play

During the autumn term, F1 held four literacy Stay and Play sessions for parents.  The parents
were given a chance to spend time with their children within the setting, alongside observing
the class teacher carry out a reading session with the children. The main aim of the session
was to equip the parents with skills and strategies to aid their child’s early reading
development. During the session, the teacher and TA had an opportunity to share children’s
progress and learning with parents/carers.  At the end of the session, the N2 children received
their ‘bookstart’ reading packs with their F1 reading book; this book is to be changed every
Thursday at the beginning of the session.

​The sessions were very well received with 26 out of 32 parents attending (81%) including
one parent who has twins in the session.  25 Parents left written feedback about their
experience, and all the feedback was positive.  Here is a selection of comments:

‘Lola is always excited to come to school and talk about other children, the teachers and songs/activities. Lovely session and informative ‘reading’ ideas. I feel Lola has developed already in this first term.

Phonics

In the nursery, phonics is taught on a daily basis. Phonics helps your child to read and spell. Our nursery teaches phase one phonics through the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme. Phase one concentrates on developing children’s speaking and listening skills.

The seven aspects we cover in phase one are: 
• Environmental sounds
• Instrumental sounds
• Body sounds
• Rhythm and rhyme
• Alliteration
• Voice sounds
• Oral segmenting and blending.
