Y1 Science

Our F2 Work

Dinosaur Invasion

We noticed large footprints on our carpet and decided to investigate.  We found out that they were dinosaur footprints so we made traps to catch them.  Jungle Jim came to visit and told us more about dinosaurs and did a science demonstration, showing us how a volcano erupts.

Understanding of the World

This term, we thought about the world around us and have been looking for the signs of Autumn. We found out about what jobs people do at school. We met the School Nurse and she weighed and measured us. We have also investigated what it would be like to go on a jungle expedition!

Our F1 Work

Water Exploration

F1 are enjoying exploring the outdoor water resources.  The children are working together to find ways of catching and stopping the flow of water.  They are also using mathematical vocabulary, linked to capacity in their play.  The children are also developing their physical skills by practising putting their water clothes on independently!

Ice Exploration

When we came into Nursery, we found some of our favourite toys had been frozen into blocks of ice! We had to find ways of getting them out of the ice.  We found that, over time, the ice melted and our toys were freed!  We then found out how and what ice is made of.

Remembrance Reflection

F1 spent some time thinking about Remembrance Day.  Together, they created collaborative poppy handprints and, at 11am, took part in the two minutes silence.

Making Shortbread Candles

We made shortbread candles to remind us of the candles that are lit during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.  The children were all involved in measuring (by counting scoops onto the scales) and combining the ingredients to make the shortbread mixture. Throughout the activity, we talked about the changes as they occurred.  The next day, we talked about the changes that had occurred after being cooked.  We decorated our biscuits and then enjoyed eating them.

Autumn Exploration

F1 has been exploring the changes that happen in the natural environment during the autumn season.  As part of this exploration, the class went on an autumn walk around the school’s outdoor areas. They collected autumn finds and used them to create autumn collages.
