Our Y1 Work
Sunflowers
As part of Year 1’s science topic; plants; the children have all had a go at planting their own sunflowers. They have been observing and caring for their flower each day and learning about what plants need to grow. As part of this the children have measured and described how their plant is changing. The children have thoroughly enjoyed watching their seeds blossom into long stems and begin to become a flower.
Making Birdfeeders
Skittles Experiment
As part of Science Week Year 1 completed a skittles experiment! The children needed to create a pattern, pour water on top and observe what happened. They were amazed as the colours streamed through the water. The children discussed what had happened and why. They furthered their scientific enquiry by creating their own questions – What would happen if we used smarties? What would happen if the water was warm? What will happen if we left them in the water all night?
Snowmen
Year 1 decided to make the most of the snow and bring it inside for an experiment! We built snowmen in groups and predicted what would happen to them when we brought them into the classroom. We measured and observed the difference in heights after an hour.
It was really exciting lesson that the children thoroughly enjoyed! They all made different predictions and provided reasons for their ideas.

“I thought the snowmen would stay the same as we had built them so well!” – Lily
“The snowmen completely melted!” - Krystian
Animals and Humans
Year 1 have learnt about their senses as part of our science topic ‘Animals and Humans’. The children explored their senses by completing different activities for each.
They had to listen very carefully to the given sound to play sound bingo, which explored the sense of hearing. They had to close their eyes and smell the different smell jars, taste different fruits and put their hand into the feely bag. Everyone was really brave to try this without the sense of sight and it allowed children to really explore and describe the different feelings, smells and tastes. Lastly, the children had to play eye-spy activities, looking very carefully at a busy picture to identify different objects.

‘The lemon was so so sour! – Jessica
‘I didn’t like the smell of the onion. It was stinky.’ – Antoni P
‘It was lots of fun getting to use our senses. Everyone’s faces were really funny!’ - Bethany

Space
We have found out all about Space this term. We found out about the solar system and planet Earth. We created a space centre in our class and became astronauts. The children loved being in the control centre and blasting off in our rocket.
Aliens have landed and they love pizza! We followed instructions and made some alien pizza. We cut the peppers, spread the tomato sauce and sprinkled cheese on top. They were delicious! We linked our cooking to numeracy because we found out that aliens love double the amount that we can eat.

Understanding of the world.
The children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. They are encouraged to bring photographs from home and talk about them to the rest of the class. They also look at how other people live.
We learn about the world around us and have looked for signs of autumn. We encourage lots of exploration inside and outside of the classroom. This term, we found out about hedgehogs and what happens to them during the winter. We tried to make a hedgehog home to encourage one to hibernate in our outdoor classroom.
We also became scientists and made our own perfume by crushing flowers and adding water.
Using technology is an important part of the Early Years Curriculum and children are taught to use the computer. As well as this, we encourage them to take photos, answer ‘telephones’ and use technology in their role play.e play.
