Year 3  Computing

Our Y2 Work

Bee-Bots in Year 2

Year 2 worked in groups to programme the Bee-Bots to move in different directions. They directed them to move around a variety of maps and roads. This ICT lesson was to support their work in Geography in making Pirate Treasure Maps and their ability to give clear directions.

Our Y1 Work

Beebots

On Friday 11th November, Year 1 began to use Beebots to complete simple codes.  The children began by simply programming the Beebot, using forwards and backwards codes, to reach children across the circle.  The children had to first predict how many movements would be needed and then input their estimate to make the Beebot move.  They were great at using their incorrect first attempts to debug and change the code.  We then began to make the journey more challenging by including turns.

After that, the children challenged themselves further by directing Beebot
around the jungle to meet different jungle animals.  The children had to first plan the journey the Beebot would make and then input the code.  They continued to debug and correct their codes if they were wrong.

Overall, Year 1 had a very successful and enjoyable afternoon, beginning to learn coding skills.

iPads

On Monday 26th October, Year 1 had a go at using the school iPads to complete research for their information booklets.  The children listened carefully so that they could navigate different websites.  We talked about the basic skills needed, how to look after the iPads and about keeping safe on the internet.

‘I really like the iPads.’ – Laura

‘It’s fun to do our work on the iPad.’ – Teegan

First Session in the ICT Suite

Year 1 has had its first session in the ICT suite!

The children focused on learning the key skills necessary for using a computer.   We talked about and practiced our mouse control, tried identifying the different keys on the key board to write a sentence and even learnt how to use the space bar and back space.  Some of us really challenged ourselves and tried to add capital letters.

‘I was able to write a whole sentence about myself.’ – Isaac

‘It was a bit tricky but I enjoyed it.’ – Hollie
