Year 3  Literacy

Our Y2 Work

Katie Morag Delivers the Mail

In Literacy, we have begun looking at the stories of Katie Morag by Mairi Hedderwick. The children worked in groups to act out their ideas for the ending of a Katie Morag story. After all groups had shown their ideas we listened to the real ending to see who had predicted correctly.

Pirates ‘Ahoy Me Hearties’

This term we have been studying Pirate fiction and non-fiction texts. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this topic and immersed themselves in the subject. For their homework they designed and made their own pirate flags which they showed off proudly to the rest of the school in our ‘Pirates Parade’.

Our Y1 Work

Book Week

On Friday February 24th, we were visited by the author MP Robertson.  He taught the children how to draw dragons and shared some of his stories with them. We had previously been looking at his book, ‘The Egg’ and the children wrote their own versions based on this story during Book Week.

On Friday March 3rd, the whole school dressed as dragons to celebrate the end of Book Week.  A huge effort was made by all children - with a lot of help from their parents! Year 1 and Year 6 brought in their favourite books and they shared these with each other. They loved talking about their books together and reading their favourite sections.

Alien Landing

An alien crashed into the Year 1 courtyard! It was very exciting and we wanted to find out all the information that we could. We observed the scene, drawing pictures and adding captions.  We interviewed an eye-witness and looked at previous facts about aliens and UFOs, highlighting the relevant information.

‘I think that the alien has climbed through the window and into the school!’ - Joanna

‘I found out that aliens are green and can run really fast.’ - Ebu
After the exciting discovery of an alien spaceship, year 1 wanted to find out all about aliens. The children worked hard to find out facts and created a non-chronological report with lots of information. They learnt that a report needs to include an introduction, sub-headings and an interesting fact to finish.

Here we are performing our report using actions to help us remember all the information.

Instructions

Year 1 were so proud of their instructions on how to make gingerbread men, they shared them with F2. We also let them have some of the gingerbread biscuits to taste.
‘I felt really proud.’ - Joanna

‘All the children loved hearing the brilliant instructions from Year 1 and found the biscuits really yummy.’ - Mrs Mullen (F2)

Gingerbread Men

On Monday 19th September, Year 1 was very busy baking gingerbread men following our learning about the Gingerbread Man story.  We all had a go at mixing, rolling and cutting the mixture to make our own biscuits.  We had to follow the instructions very carefully to ensure we got everything right.

‘They smell so yummy.’ - Makayla

‘Luckily, mine has lost his leg so he can’t run away.’ - Alivia

Traditional Tales

On Monday 12th September, the children in Year 1 all turned into detectives and explored the given clues on their tables!  Each table had been given clues to help them identify different traditional tales.  The children had to look carefully at the clues and use their own knowledge to help justify their reasons.

‘I think it is the Three Little Pigs because there is straw and sticks which the pigs used to make their houses.’ - Esther

‘This story is Goldilocks because there are 3 different sized bowls for daddy bear, mummy bear and baby bear.’ - Joanna

‘I liked looking at the clues and being detectives! It was fun working out which story each table had.’ - Ebu
