Year 3 History
Our Year 2 Work
Burning Pudding Lane
On Friday March 23rd, Year 1 and Year 2 took the cardboard houses we had constructed and set them out like Pudding Lane on the playground. The children had made their houses in pairs during a previous lesson. The houses were then stuck down onto cardboard so that they could not blow away in the wind. Fire safety precautions were taken to ensure the children were in no danger as they watched. The teachers then set fire to the end of the row of houses, whilst the children watched from a distance. It was a very windy day and so the fire spread quickly as it had done in 1666. The children were amazed to watch the flames leap from one house to the next and were interested to look at the ashes that remained when the fire died down.
The Great Fire of London
On Monday January 29th Year 2 enjoyed a History day focused on The Great Fire of London. In the morning they constructed nets of houses to make our own Pudding Lane, then explored games and researched the topic on the I-pads. In the afternoon, we welcomed The Partake Theatre Company. The children learned lots of interesting information about The Great Fire of London. They all wore costumes and re-enacted the events of the fire of 1666.
Our Y1 Work
Victorian Day
On Wednesday June 24th, Year 1 and 2 enjoyed a wonderful Victorian day. Everybody came to school dressed in costume and we welcomed Mistress Lisa who led our day.
The day began with the children learning what it would be like to be a Victorian servant. The children carried out jobs like setting the table, scrubbing, polishing and using the mangle. We then looked at a range of artefacts which would have been used in Victorian homes.
After playtime the children learnt what it would be like to be a Victorian school child. They all had a hand, nail and shoe inspection carried out by the stern mistress and head boy and girl. Then we took part in Arithmetic, History and writing lessons. We used slates with charcoals and then tried using ink dip. We found this very tricky!
The children went outside for ‘drill’ and were allowed to play with outdoor games like marbles, wooden hoops, skittles and hobby horses. Finally, Charlotte was punished with the cane on her knuckles (only pretending!) and David was made to wear the Dunce cap!
We then played with indoor games like Jacob’s ladders, indoor skittles, puppets, Zoetropes and learnt some Parlour games. It was a wonderful and very educational day for all of us.

Sherwood Forest
On Tuesday November 15th, Years 1 and 2 went on a trip to Sherwood Forest to enrich our history topic about ‘Inspirational People’.
We learnt about Robin Hood and his Merry Men and what it was like to live in Medieval times. We were shown around the forest by an outlaw called Robert of Wentworth and he told us many stories about the world of Robin Hood.
The children had a wonderful day and found it very hard to believe the size of the Major Oak!

Inspirational People
As part of our topic, ‘Inspirational People’, Year 1 has been exploring the life of Robin Hood.
We read a story and re-enacted it, with each group taking a scene to retell. |
