Y4 History
Stone Age Stew
The children enjoyed eating traditional Stone Age-type food as part of their topic. Mixing berries with oats and honey, the children blended it all in heated saucepans before stirring it to a consistency and eating it.
Stone Age Day September 28th 2018
The children enjoyed a fabulous session with the Theatre Workshop group where they ‘met’ a world famous archaeologist, discovered artefacts on a dig and communicated with a cave dweller. They also put together their own timeline for the Stone Age to Iron Age eras.
Year 4 spent the afternoon learning about how Stone Age people expressed their ideas on cave walls with a series of drawings. They then designed two of their own before choosing one to carve out with an art knife on a clay tile.
Our Year 3 Work
Ancient Egypt
For our topic on Ancient Egypt, Partake Theatre Company came in to deliver a fun-filled day all about Ancient Egypt. We had fun smelling spices, making a cartouche, discussing artefacts and acting out a burial ceremony. Aleyna made the perfect princess!
Our Y2 Work
Victorian Vegetable Soup
Year 2 cooked some Victorian vegetable soup as part of both our History and Science topics. They prepared the root vegetables by careful peeling and chopping, softened the vegetables by cooking them in a pan on the hob and then finally placed them into a soup maker. The children then tasted they soup and wrote about what they liked and how it could have been improved.
Victorian Day
On Wednesday May 24th, Keystage 1 held a Victorian Day in school. Mistress Lucy came to visit us and teach us about Victorian schools, playground toys, servants and household artefacts, toys and parlour games.
Sherwood Forest Trip
On Tuesday November 15th, Years 1 and 2 went on a trip to Sherwood Forest to enrich our history topic on ‘Inspirational People’.
We learnt about Robin Hood and his Merry Men and what it was like to live in Medieval times. We were shown around the forest by an outlaw called Robert of Wentworth and he told us many stories about the world of Robin Hood.
The children had a wonderful day and found it very hard to believe the size of the Major Oak.

‘It was a fantastic day.’ - Aleyna
Our Year 1 Work...
The Great Fire of London came to St. Mary’s!
The Great Fire of London came to St Mary’s!
As part of our history topic, Year 1 and 2 made Stuart houses. We described these and compared them to houses in the present.
Then we went outside and set them up as Pudding Lane, making sure the houses were close together.
When they were ready, Mrs Carberry carefully began the fire and we were able to see it spread along the houses.

‘The fire spread just like the Fire of London.’ - Aleyna
‘The fire was really cool to watch.’ - Filip J
Black History
During Black History week, we found out lots about the way black people used to be treated. We began the week with the boys sitting on chairs and girls on the carpet. During this lesson, Miss Catton only asked the boys questions and it was very unfair! We soon realised that this was because she was showing us how black people were treated unequally. Year 1 also learnt about Martin Luther King. We listened to part of his speech - ‘I have a dream’ - and thought about what dreams we have for the world. Finally, we looked at African art which was very bright and colourful. Here we are, painting our sunset pictures.
Partake History
On Thursday 7th January, Year 1 took part in a Partake Theatre group production about the Great Fire of London. We all got to dress up as people from 1666 and act out the events of the fire. We learnt that the fire began in a bakery on Pudding Lane and we used ribbons to represent the fire getting bigger and bigger. The baker’s name was Tom Farriner and he had left his oven on overnight. Lots of people passed buckets of water from the Thames in an attempt to put out the fire.
