Y4 Newsletter Lent Term 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school. We hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year! This is another important term for your child as we continue to prepare them for their move into the upper part of KS2.
In English, we will continue to work with them to boost their writing, grammar and reading comprehension skills to enable them to achieve their very best each term. In Maths we will work hard to increase their arithmetic speed, times table recall skills and support their understanding to help them answer a range of reasoning questions too. We also have some exciting opportunities in store for the children with topic work exploring the ancient Egyptians. In ICT, we will continue to focus on the important subject of e-Safety as well as constructing a series of Scratch coding projects.
Our Catholic Life is central to all we do at St Mary’s and we place great emphasis on our values: Kindness, Respect, Commitment, Responsibility, Appreciation, Honesty and Resilience. Our mission statement is linked to all our curriculum areas.
It is important that you continue to encourage your child to read at home every day and continue to listen to your child read as much as possible. This will help to develop their reading speed and fluency, extend their understanding and extend their vocabulary. We will especially expect those children who are receiving additional support in reading in school to be reading regularly at home, to an adult wherever possible. We reward children who consistently read at home, so signing your child's organiser helps to make sure they get the recognition they deserve.
As well as reading with your child, please encourage them to practise times tables for 5 minutes each day. The national expectation is that they should know all of the times tables up to 12 times 12 by the end of Y4 when they will take part in a national online test. Even if your child already knows these, they should regularly rehearse them to maintain the rapid recall needed at this level. Someone testing them at random each day will have a huge impact on them being able to respond quickly and use these facts accurately in calculations.
Homework will usually be given out on a Friday and collected in on the following Friday. As well as this, spellings will also be given out weekly on Tuesdays and tested the following Tuesday. There may be additional homework given throughout this term for groups or individuals if we feel that it will help your child.
P.E will take place on Fridays with Miss Birch, so please ensure your child’s P.E kit is kept in school.
Please note that your child needs to come to school with their own water bottle (already filled). We also value your cooperation in ensuring your children do not play on the playground apparatus before or after school.
If you have any questions or comments, or would like to help out with anything we are doing in school, then please feel free to come and speak to us.
Thank you for your support,
Mr Poole and Mrs Daykin.

Year 4 – Advent 2019
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school. We hope you had a restful break over the summer. This is another important year for your child as they move up into Year 4 and the top of lower KS2!
In literacy we will continue to work with them to boost their writing, grammar and reading comprehension skills to enable them to achieve their very best each term. In maths we will work hard to increase their arithmetic speed, times table recall skills and boost their understanding to help them answer a range of reasoning questions too. We also have some exciting opportunities in store for the children this term with topic work exploring biomes and climates. In ICT we will focus on the important subject of e-Safety by deepening their understanding so they can write and perform an e-Safety rap.
There will be an emphasis throughout school on the children demonstrating and understanding our school values as part of the character curriculum. We want our school values to underpin everything the children do: Kindness, Respect, Commitment, Responsibility, Appreciation, Honesty and Resilience.
