Class Liturgy based on our topic ‘People’
At the end of our topic ‘People’ a group of children planned and delivered a class liturgy in the outside classroom. They based the ‘Word’ on the Song of Ruth and set a mission to play with someone who looks lonely at playtime.
Jesus’ Family Tree
Today we looked at Jesus’ family tree based on Matthew (1:1-17). We discussed what we already knew about some of Jesus’ ancestors before using the iPads to research some more. We then collated some of the main facts together and posted them on the board, sharing the information with the rest of the class.

Lent Reflection Day
Our Lenten Reflection Day took place on Ash Wednesday this year. The day began with a whole school assembly where the Chaplaincy Team talked about the meaning and significance of the day. After that, we all went over to church for Mass and received our ashes.
In Year 3, we wrote our Lenten promises onto an outline of ourselves and decorated them before they went up on our classroom display board. We thought about how we could be more like Jesus and what we could do to make a difference to ourselves and others.
We are going to use our board to help us on our Lenten journey, by reminding ourselves of the promises we made and also by following the daily calendar.
Our day finished with a special Liturgy in the hall, where all classes gathered and reflected on our wonderful day.

Advent Reflection Day
On Monday, 5th December we had a whole school, Advent Reflection Day. In Year 3, we talked about the Advent Wreath and what it represents before going to make our very own class wreath.
We thought about the importance of Advent and how it is a time for waiting and preparing for the coming of Jesus. Everyone wrote an advent promise which we hope to fulfil during this important time.
After sharing our promises with the class, we added them to our wooden wreath which we have used for our class display.
In the afternoon, we learnt about the Jesse tree and God’s family. We shared some Bible scriptures which we illustrated onto a Christmas bauble and wrote down which scripture it was.
At the end of the day, we all joined together in the hall where each class shared what they had been doing during the day. It was then time to take a moment in prayer and reflect.

‘Rules’ Retreat Morning
During our Retreat Morning on Monday 6th June, the children were thinking about rules at home and in school. We talked about the importance of having rules and what happens if they are not followed. The children thought about times when they have not followed rules and created a short drama to show this. They then discussed how they can show that they are sorry.
Opportunities to be Good Retreat Morning – March 2017
During our Retreat Morning with Frances, the children began to think about how Lent is the perfect opportunity to say sorry and start again. The children thought about the things they would like to say sorry for and learned a liturgical dance to the song 'Father I have sinned'. After play they thought about how Lent is the perfect time to do good for others just like Jesus did.
Lenten Reflection Day
On Ash Wednesday, March 1st, we had a day of reflection and prayer throughout school. The day began with a whole school assembly to share the meaning and significance of the day and we all then attended Mass in Church and received our ashes. After that, Year 2 answered some questions on a prepared sheet and thought more about Ash Wednesday. They then wrote their Lenten promises on feet and decorated them. This was to show that we are trying to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. They also decorated crosses and thought about what will happen at Easter and why we must prepare ourselves. The day culminated in a special Liturgy to celebrate and reflect together.
The Baptism of Jesus
On January 26th, as part of our RE topic about Books, we looked in detail at the story of the Baptism of Jesus. Some of the children wrote a retell, some drew out a storyboard and the last group re-enacted the story and then hot-seated the character of John the Baptist. This helped the children to think more deeply about the feelings of the people in the story.
Epiphany Retreat morning
On January 9th, Year 2 welcomed Frances, our school Chaplain, to lead a retreat, thinking about the feast day of the Epiphany when the wise men came to visit baby Jesus.
The children thought about the star they followed and how special it must have been. They also thought about why they brought the gifts they did.
After this, they thought about the gifts we have been given from God and how we can let them shine each day.
It was a really lovely morning spent reflecting on this special feast.
Shabbat
As part of our study of Judaism during Other Faiths week, Year 2 re-enacted the Jewish celebration of Shabbat. They learnt all about how Jewish people celebrate this special day every weekend to mark the end of the week and the day of rest.
Advent Reflection Day
On Monday November 28th, the whole school took part in an Advent Reflection Day to mark the beginning of our preparation for Christmas.
Frances, our school Chaplain, began the day with a beautiful assembly to help the children think about the true meaning of Christmas. We all then returned to our classrooms and took part in reflective and prayerful activities throughout the day.
The day culminated in a sharing assembly where members of each class came to the front to talk about the activities covered by their class.
In Year 2, we thought about the ways in which we prepare for Christmas and why they are important. We made Advent promises, and together we made a real and a handmade Advent Wreath. Finally, we thought about the significance of all the parts of the wreath.ath.

Baptism
On Tuesday October 18th, Years 1, 2 and 3 visited St Mary’s Church to learn about the Sacrament of Baptism from Father David. Children were chosen to play the parts of the parents and Godparents and Father David led the children in a re-enactment of the ceremony.
They learnt lots of extra information about the signs and symbols involved, which will help them in their new Come and See topic.
Once back at school, Year 2 were split into small groups to play all the roles in the ceremony.

‘Beginnings’ Retreat with Frances
On 26th September 2016, Year 2 were on retreat, thinking about 'beginnings'. We reflected on how God created everything and how it all starts with him. We looked at the creation story and went out and about using our magnifying glasses to look at all the beauty in the world.
Our Year 1 Work...
Assembly
To end our topic about feeling sorry, Year 1 performed an assembly for their parents and the rest of the school.
We worked hard to incorporate all our learning and ensured we were able to pass on the important message of saying sorry. Every child was given an important role saying lines, acting, dancing or writing prayers. We all thoroughly enjoyed celebrating with everybody and showing off what we had learnt. |

Year of Mercy
This year, the Catholic Church is celebrating a year of Mercy and on Friday 4th March, we celebrated a day of Mercy.
To introduce this, Father David told us the story of The Prodigal Son, which tells us that, no matter what we do, we will always be forgiven if we are truly sorry.
Year 1 thought about this story and discussed the things that we have done wrong during our lives.
We wrote these into a sorry prayer and put them into water.
Later we were able to see that our sins had been washed away as the writing on our prayers had disappeared.

Change
To begin our topic about ‘change’, Year 1 was very lucky to have a retreat afternoon with Francis.
The topic is linked to the special time of Lent and explores how Christians aim to change to be more like Jesus. We began the afternoon by looking at ourselves in the mirror and describing what physical features we could see. Francis then explained that Jesus and God do not look at our appearance but have a ‘magical mirror’ which sees us deep inside and shows our kindness.
We all drew a picture of ourselves doing something wrong and needing to say sorry. We stuck this on a mirror and then completed a picture of us being kind. Individually, we stuck this over our previous picture to show the image that Jesus sees and how our kindness can take away the bad. As part of our reflection, we thought about how we could change during Lent and ensure we were being like the kind picture.

Advent Reflection Day
Monday 30th November was our Advent Reflection Day in school.
We had a lovely, calm and reflective day praying and creating art work on an Advent theme. We also made our class Advent Wreath and completed work about the symbolism and meanings behind the parts of the wreath.
At the end of the day, the whole school came together to share our work, our thoughts
and our prayers.

Hinduism
As part of Hinduism week, we looked at the story of Rama and Sita. We were able to sequence the story and retell it in our own words. At the end of the story, the city celebrates Sita’s return with lights. This is why Diwali is the festival of light. To celebrate in our own way, we all made a lantern.
‘The story was great! Ravana had 10 heads and 20 arms!’ - Theo
‘I really enjoyed making the lantern and I am going to make more at home.’ - Summer

Baptism Retreat
As part of our RE topic ‘belonging’, we were lucky to have Gabie in to help us reflect. During our retreat, we looked carefully at all the signs and symbols of Baptism. We lit candles, washed our hands to represent the washing away of our sins and wrote Baptismal messages. We really enjoyed our day and it helped us to understand this important ceremony.
Baptism
On Tuesday October 13th, Key Stage 1 and Foundation 2 had a trip over to Church to take part in the re-enactment of a Baptism ceremony with Father David.
All year groups are studying Baptism as part of their Come and See RE topic, and watching and taking part in the ceremony helped to bring this Sacrament to life for the children.children.

Families
As part of our first RE topic ‘families’, we have been thinking about our own families and how we show love. We compared this to Jesus’ family and the events in His life.
During our topic, we were very lucky to have a retreat morning where we could focus on our families and reflect.
We began our day by looking at Jesus and discussing the events in His family’s life. We completed role plays of these different events and then looked at Psalms.
After this, we decided to write a letter to our own family to say thank you to them.
