Y5  Enrichment Activities

Our Year 4 Work

Discovery Day - Nottingham University

Year 4 visited Nottingham University for a sports discovery day on Friday 15th June. The children had the opportunity to sample new sports, all of which are played at the university. They tried boxing, taekwondo and korfball! They also took part in a session tasting a variety of fruits and vegetables and learning about why each of them are good for our bodies. Finally, in the afternoon, they were given a guided tour of the campus by some current students, learning about living, eating, learning and leisure on site.

Park Ranger Day

The children, who didn’t go on the Kingswood residential, were lucky enough to have a day on the Forest Recreation ground with two park rangers. They carried out different activities that tested their resilience and their team work skills including, archery, orienteering and life sized draughts. It was a fun filled day!

KINGSWOOD 2018

What a fantastic 3 days of outdoor activities!  Glorious weather and great fun. We are very proud of the children’s excellent behaviour, positive attitude and masses of enthusiasm.

You will probably hear them singing about coconuts for a while as it was our campfire song!

The children’s most talked about activities were abseiling and climbing so take a look at the photos to find out just how brave they were!

Photos appear in year 4 and year 5, so have a good look at both and don’t be surprised if a few are mixed up!

How Much Do You Trust Your Partner?

After talking about Trust we tested out how much we trusted our partners
By closing our eyes,  letting ourselves fall back and relying totally on our partner to catch us.
It was much harder than some of us expected!

Our Y3 Work

Black History Week

During this week we were very fortunate to have a whole school assembly led by Stickman.  After that each class worked with him to create a class poem. Our photos show us working with him.

Anti-bullying week – 14th to 18th November

Our class performed a fantastic assembly for the whole school during anti-bullying week. It included a short play about Tyrone the Terrible, a dinosaur who bullied poor little Boland, a smaller dinosaur.

We also performed a range of poetry linked to bullying and one of our favourites was called, Everyone Sitting on the Friendship Bench.

Enjoy the photographs!

Our Year 2 Work...

Carnival Day

On Friday July 1st, Foundation 2 and Key Stage 1 celebrated Carnival Day.

This was to enrich our topic about Brazil and the Rainforest in geography. We were joined by ‘Stickman’ and Serena, who led sessions in percussion, drumming and Samba. The children also made Carnival-style head dresses.

It was a fantastic day of celebration, which culminated in an energetic and exciting assembly to share our new talents with our parents and friends.

Drug Aware 2016 - Year 2

We have been learning how to be safe with medicine.  Our lovely teddy bear (Ted) didn’t want to get up this morning, so we were trying to find out why.  We took it in turns to ask him a question to find out what was wrong.

We discovered that he had caught a cold and a nasty cough and we all decided what things Ted might need.  Because of his temperature, we decided he needed to go to the doctor for some medicine.

We all understand that medicine can be quite dangerous, which is why we discussed all the things we need to remember when taking it.

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations

On Friday June 10th, the whole school held a street party on the playground to celebrate Her Majesty’s Birthday. We all wore red, white and blue or dressed up as Kings and Queens for the day.  In Year 2, we wrote letters to the Queen, learnt all about her amazing life and designed birthday cards in her honour.  After we had eaten our fantastic picnic lunch, our plans unfortunately had to be changed, as it began to pour with rain.  However, that did not spoil our fun as we took our singing and dancing back into the classroom instead! It was a wonderful celebration, culminating in a whole school assembly with a live link up to the Windsor Castle Tea Party.

Recycling in Year 2

In Year 2, Sim brought her wormery to show the children.

We handled the worms and looked closely at them with our magnifying glasses.

Sim told us lots of interesting facts about worms and we learnt what amazing recyclers they are!

Meet the Creatures

On Monday April 25th, Years 1 and 2 were visited by the Meet the Creatures team.  They brought in creatures that live in the rainforests of the world and taught us lots of interesting information about them.  The children were able to touch, hold and observe the creatures as they moved.

We saw a Tarantula, Python, Milk Snake, Gecko, Bearded Dragon, Rat, Tortoise, Hissing Cockroach and a Stick Insect.  This experience enriched both our topic and science work for this term.

The Opening of the Brand New Hyson Green Library

In December, Year 2 were invited to attend the opening of the brand new Hyson Green Library inside the Mary Potter Health Centre.

They cut the ribbon to announce the library open, alongside the Lady Mayor of Nottingham.  They were then treated to a performance by the magician, Geoffrey Jumper.

The children walked down to the Mary Potter Centre, following the route they had planned during their geography topic about our local area.  They were asked to find a safe route on the map that would involve us crossing the fewest main roads possible.

Apple Pressing

There has been a bumper harvest of apples from our school allotment this season.

The children harvested them and brought them back to school for us all to share.

Jenny, our gardener, helped us to use an apple press to make apple juice and then we all had a drink.

We all agreed it was much tastier than juice from the shop!

Sponsored Walk October 2015

The whole school took part in a Sponsored Walk to the Arboretum this term.  We were trying to raise money for shelters to be built on the playgrounds at school.  We were very lucky with the weather and had a wonderful time playing together before the long walk home.

Skegness Trip 2015

In September, Year 1 and Year 2 travelled to Skegness for the day.

This was an excellent way of enriching our ‘Land Ahoy!’ topic, which focuses on the coast.

It was a fantastic day and the children behaved beautifully.

The journey was long and tiring but we all agreed it was well worth it.
