Y5  Science

During the first half term our topic has been Properties and Changes of Materials.  We have done many practical experiments, including making casein plastic and carbon dioxide!  The photographs below show different stages of each experiment.

Our Year 4 Work

Teeth

The enamel on our teeth is made of similar material to the shells of eggs so we investigated the effect of different drinks on egg shells.

I don’t think we will be quite so keen on drinking on coke after this investigation!

Solids Liquids and Gases

Enacting the movement of molecules in solids (tightly packed together), liquids (more loosely fastened) and gases (that can flow freely).

Sorting objects into solids liquids and gases and explaining our choices.

Investigations

We found the biggest hand span in our class by measuring the width and length of our hands and by finding out how many glass beads could be held with one grasp.

Our information was added to a leader board for comparison.

Nell and Juliusz presented the information to the whole school in our science week assembly.

Making Rockets

We worked in groups of Y3/4 children to design and make rockets. It was great fun making but unfortunately the launch didn’t go well.

THAT’S SCIENCE!

RSPB

With the help of an expert from the RSPB we became more aware of bird life in and around school and how to find evidence of them.

It was great fun completing our wild words sheet and collecting evidence of birds and other animals found on the school grounds.

Investigating Circuits

Our first task was to make a bulb light up with no instructions!
It took a while but we soon found out about complete and broken circuits.
After that we had great fun adding a switching and experimenting with buzzers and motors.

Our Y3 Work

Investigating Magnet Strengths

Investigating Magnet Strengths

Investigating Friction

We tested cars rolling down a ramp over different surfaces, such as carpet, rubber and plastic to help us learn how friction influences the distance a car travels.

Bug Hotels

As part of our science topic, Humans and other Animals’ Needs we investigated the basic needs of all animals. The children then designed or made a bug hotel for a small creature of their choice. The results were fantastic. Thanks to the children and all the parents who helped them!

Our Year 2 Work...

Planting Seeds

We have been planting sunflower seeds in Year 2.  We are carrying out an experiment to discover what plants actually need to grow and flourish.

The children decided on the conditions of the experiment and then made their predictions about what would happen.

Each group now has seeds growing in the dark, with water and without, and in the sunshine, with water and without. We are keeping a check on our seeds and recording their growth.

Arboretum Trip

On Friday April 21st, Years 1 and 2 walked to the Arboretum.

While we were there, we used our ‘Spot It’ guides from the RSPB to look for minibeasts, birds, trees and shrubs, flowers and other signs of life like spider’s webs and squirrel’s drays.

This trip was useful to enrich the science topics for each year group.up.

Visit from the RSPB

On Thursday April 21st, Year 2 had a visit from a representative from the RSPB.  She gave a presentation to the children about how to look for habitats in our local environment.  In small groups, the children were given equipment like magnifying glasses, binoculars and collection pots.  They were also given ‘Spot It’ guides with pictures of items to look for and tick off. The children went out to explore and observe on our school field, the playgrounds and the Sensory Garden.  They were encouraged to collect minibeasts in their collection pots to look at more closely and then return them carefully to their natural habitat.

Mad Science

On Monday March 14th, to begin Science Week, the whole school watched an assembly led by Fizzik from the Mad Science team.

Fizzik visited Year 2 to lead a workshop about Dry Ice (solid carbon dioxide).  The children took part in lots of different experiments and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.  They learnt a great deal about solids, liquids and gases and this enriched our science topic about Materials.

Animals Including Humans

This term’s science topic is ‘Animals including Humans’ and it is being taught to the children every Tuesday afternoon by Mrs Hayes.

They have learned about how we group living things, how we take care of them, life cycles and food chains.

As far as humans are concerned, they have learnt about growth and development, what humans need to survive, how to keep healthy and clean and how to eat well.

The Chickens

The children had the most amazing two weeks when the chicken eggs were delivered to school on Monday November 2nd.

We watched them hatch out of their eggs in the incubator and then transferred them to the Brooding Box as they grew.

The children learned how to hold them correctly and cleaned and fed them daily.  They wrote diaries to document the daily changes.

The chicks were collected after 2 weeks and taken to a local organic farm to live out their days.

Teddy Bear’s Hospital

On Wednesday November 4th, Year 2 had a visit from the doctors of the Teddy Bear’s Hospital.

The children had all brought in their poorly teddies to be looked at and each one was examined and x-rayed.

The children were taught how to wash their hands effectively and this was tested using a special machine that checked for remaining germs on their skin.

They also carried out activities based on eating healthily and cleaning their teeth correctly.  These activities supported their work in science this term.
