Y6 Enrichment Activities
Safety Zone
On 26th September, Year 6 spent the afternoon at Holme Pierrepont, taking part in Safety Zone. There were a series of zones set up, each representing one of the emergency services and other areas where safety is paramount.
We learnt how to give CPR and how to put someone in the recovery position which is an incredibly useful life skill.
The police surprised us with the startling number of incidents of knife crime in England and how they try to tackle it. They gave advice on what to do if we are ever asked to look after a knife for someone.
The fire service used a mock-up house to show the potential dangers in our homes. We had to spot all the danger zones which included things like an iron left on an ironing board, damaged leads, hair straighteners on the bed, no battery in the smoke alarm, amongst many more.
A vet talked to us about how to be safe around dogs. It was fascinating to learn the different signs a dog may present when it is happy or feeling threatened.
We learnt that if we are in difficulty in water, the best chance of survival is not to panic and flap around but to float.
Staff from Nottingham Transport taught us how to remain safe, both getting on and off the bus and the importance of not distracting the driver.

Our Y5 Work
Park Ranger Day
The children, who didn’t go on the Kingswood residential, were lucky enough to have a day on the Forest Recreation ground with two park rangers. They carried out different activities that tested their resilience and their team work skills including, archery, orienteering and life sized draughts. It was a fun filled day!
Year 5 The Museum of Our Street (MOOS)
This term, Year 5 have taken part in The Museum of Our Street project (MOOS). The aim of the MOOS project is for schools to explore and celebrate where local children live and go to school. As part of the project, Year 5 examined maps of Hyson Green (some as far back as a hundred years) and looked at old photographs of Radford Road. After going on a local area walk along Radford Road, the children looked at the differences between the current shops and those in the past.
The children then worked with Nottingham artist, Jessica Kemp, to create models of these, some of which will be exhibited at the Mary Potter Library. We will let you know details of the exhibition nearer the time.

Year 5/6 Pintsize Theatre Company
Pintsize Theatre Company are a Nottingham based drama group that provides projects in schools that are designed and devised to support the PSHE curriculum in primary and secondary schools.
Abigail’s Story
This production informed the children about the importance of staying safe online. The group performed a drama about the risks and dangers of giving out personal details out to people they don't know, and the issues this can cause. The children found the afternoon extremely engaging and informative and went away better prepared to deal with potential social media challenges ahead.

Olly’s Olympics
This engaging drama examined the issues of healthy eating, fitness and body awareness. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very thought-provoking.

Nathan -‘It was fun to watch, but had a serious message. It taught us how to eat healthy and why it is important.’
Zeze- ‘I loved the message and now I know how to eat healthy and how to respect my parents.’
GREAT Project
This term Year 5 have been taking part in the GREAT (Good Relationships are Equal And Trusting) Project. The children participated in 4 sessions where they learnt about what makes a relationship healthy. They discussed what a relationship is and how to spot the signs of an unhealthy relationship.
Here are some quotes from the children:
" We learnt about ChildLine - who they are and what they do to help children." Alejandro.
"The GREAT Project taught us about domestic abuse and how to have healthy relationships with our friends and families." Sasha.
"I enjoyed the GREAT Project because it taught me how to react to difficult situations that I may face in the future." Jakub.
"It helped us develop social skills and how to deal with problems later in life." Chino.
Below are some snap shots of the lessons and we have also included a video of just one of the fantastic performances the children created about friendships.
Kingswood 2018
What a fantastic 3 days of outdoor activities! Glorious weather and great fun. We are very proud of the children’s excellent behaviour, positive attitude and masses of enthusiasm.
You will probably hear them singing about coconuts for a while as it was our campfire song!
The children’s most talked about activities were abseiling and climbing so take a look at the photos to find out just how brave they were!
Photos appear in year 4 and year 5, so have a good look at both and don’t be surprised if a few are mixed up!

World Book Day
After the snow put a halt on our original World Book Day, we had a fantastic response from the children today (8th March 2018). As you can see, we had some fantastic costumes and enjoyed sharing which characters we were for the day. Thank you to our children and their families for making such an effort.
RSPB
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds visited school to take the children on a ‘Wild Words’ nature walk to observe the journeys that animals take. We walked around the school grounds collecting evidence and writing descriptive phrases about what we had found. We returned to the classroom to discuss the journeys that we had documented.
Wild Things
In October, we had the fantastic opportunity to spend the day exploring Bestwood Country Park on a ‘Wild Things’ activity day. To begin with, we worked in groups to fill sample boxes with evidence from the woods. This evidence had to appeal to the sense of touch and the other groups had to try to guess which two contrasting adjectives described our samples – just by touching them! We spent the rest of the morning participating in a variety of activities that involved using our different senses. After lunch, we learnt how to cook on a camp fire and make boggits, and took part in some exciting team building games. The whole of Year 5 had a fantastic day and we can’t wait to put our new skills into practice in the future.
Our Y4 Work
The Forest
Whilst some of our class were at Kingswood the rest of us went to the Forest to work with the rangers there. We had lots of fun learning about the animals that live there, building shelters and even making a fire to toast marshmallows.

Anti Bullying Assembly
Enjoy the photos of our amazing assembly about anti-bullying. It included singing, dancing, poetry and a fantastic play.
Y3 At the Allotment
Our visits to the allotment in September and October were beautiful sunny days where we did the following:

Sponsored walk 2015
This September, the School Council organised a sponsored walk to the Arboretum. The whole school took part, from Year 1 up to Year 6. F1 and F2 joined by holding their walk around the school field.
The weather was great and everyone had so much fun. We had a fantastic response from parents and carers who came along to support us.
We raised about £700 in total. This is an ongoing project, raising funds for our playground sun shelters.
